Pomelo & Coca-Cola 5by20 - Joining Efforts to Empower Artisans in Myanmar

At Pomelo we believe in the importance and potential of collaboration. Collaborations with other social business and non profit organisations have been part of our growth since our very beginning. Last year we began developing partnerships within the private sector including a particularly successful one with Coca-Cola.

What is 5by20?

5by20 is The Coca-Cola Company's global commitment to enable the economic empowerment of 5 million women entrepreneurs across the company's value chain by 2020. Through 5by20, we address the most common barriers women face when trying to succeed in the marketplace. In addition to access to market, this initiative offers women access to business skills training courses, financial services, and connections with peers or mentors – along with the confidence that comes with building a successful business.”

Our community of producers, representing Myanmar globally

Pomelo producers represent Myanmar in Coca-Cola’s global artisan catalogue. This is a wonderful initiative that connects artisans in 14 countries to Coca-Cola offices around the world, an online shop and Coca-Cola stores in the USA. The catalogue comprises of an unique collection of high quality crafts made from recycled and up- cycled materials from Coca-Cola packaging.

In order to select the best and most creative crafts, we launched a competition among our producers with a participation of over 11 different groups and over 70 people involved. The brief was to create crafts by up-cycling Coca-Cola’s packaging: glass bottles, cans, plastic labels, tip tabs, and more. The entries needed to be easy to transport, original ideas and Myanmar inspired. Competitors had the possibility to submit entries in the following categories: Christmas, gender neutral and women’s accessories. In the short period of two weeks, we received over 40 different submissions and were creative, fun and most importantly very original. From those Coca-Cola & Pomelo team selected the successful entries that currently represent Myanmar in their global catalogue.

This is a wonderful opportunity for our community of producers since it opens doors to a new market. In less than three months of having launched the catalogue, orders have been placed from London, Atlanta, Singapore and Myanmar.

Here you can find some photos of the competition and the catalogue.

Big thank you to Coca-Cola for such a wonderful partnership and all of us at Pomelo look forward to collaborating more in 2016.
